Beat the Streets 2018 Results: Burroughs and Snyder overcome slippery mats, early deficits

Beat the Streets 2018 was all about the comeback, as some of the biggest names on Team USA were forced to fight from behind to overcome tough opponents. Both Jordan Burroughs and Kyle Snyder had to rally from early deficits to defeat very game wrestlers as they competed in New York City.

The uncertainty of the footing remained one of the stories throughout the night. Competing outside always sounds like a good idea, but when questionable weather created condensation on the mats, wrestlers were then challenged to not only avoid the takedown, but to avoid sliding all over the mat. By the time the main event started it was clear that the mats were not a prime place for such high-level wrestling. Still, that would not be enough to deny Burroughs, Snyder and many of their teammates.

In the main event of the evening, Burroughs would defeat a very game Frank Chamizo but it was not an easy affair. At the end of the first period Chamizo held a solid 4-0 lead as his aggressive style caught the Olympic gold medalist off guard. But Burroughs showed the determination that’s helped him to become one of the greatest wrestlers this generation as he was able to rally and get the win via the score of 6-5.

Burroughs wasn’t the only Olympic gold medalist to have to come from behind as Snyder quickly found himself down against Salas Perez. At one point he was losing 8-1 in what would have been a massive upset. But Snyder would not be swayed as he chipped away at Salas’s lead and took the victory 9-8 in the final seconds of the match.

Helen Maroulis struggled at the Indian Open but she was able to pick up a 4-1 victory to get back on track over World finalist, Odunayo Adekuoroye. She’s been dealing with injuries and other issues so it was good to see her get healthy and get back to her winning ways.

Jordan Oliver and Kyle Dake picked up a pair of big wins for Team USA as well. Oliver defeated a former Olympic gold medalist as he picked up a win against Togrul Asgarov. Even though the final score was 3-3, Oliver was awarded the victory. Dake put on perhaps the best performance of the entire team as he defeated Olympic bronze medalist Livan Azcuy of Cuba. Dake has been on a tear as of late and this is yet another example of the former NCAA Champion turning up his game. J’Den Cox was also successful at Beat the Streets 2018 as he held on for a win over Yurieski Queralta.

Beat the Streets continues to grow as a major exhibition event in the world of wrestling and 2018 built upon that trend.
