The UFC on FOX 29 main event is in the books, and the company’s #5 lightweight Dustin Poirier finished off the #6 Justin Gaethje in the fourth round by TKO. The complete fight was pretty much a highlight, aside from a few eye pokes, but at the end of the day, it was Poirier who dug deeper to come up with the main event finish. What will be next for Poirier?

Main Event:

Dustin Poirier def. Justin Gaethje by TKO at :33 of round 4: Lightweight

Poirier opened up with his southpaw jab , looking to stay at range and avoid the power of Gaethje. A bit of blood was already trickling from the face of Gaethje, but that didn’t stop him from launching his patented inside leg kicks. The brawl began picking up halfway through the opening round, with the volume of Poirier being on the higher end. Poirier landed several heavy shots, but Gaethje ate them like a champ.

Gaethje returned to his leg attack to open the second round, prompting a takedown attempt from Poirier. An accidental eye poke from Gaethje briefly paused the action, allowing the athletes to catch their breath. The counter overhand right of Gaethje found a home a couple times as Poirier threw and closed the distance. Poirier continued to try and fight from the outside, but Gaethje continued to attack the leg and lure him into a brawl. Poirier attempted another takedown, but Gaethje was having none of it and remained on his feet. Gaethje came on late, even landing a Rolling Thunder Kick as time expired, leaving Poirier standing there dazed for a second. Fun!

Poirier scored an early takedown in the third round, but Gaethje popped right back up. Gaethje landed a big counter right hand that sent Poirier stumbling back to the cage, and the crowd began cheering the name of Arizona’s own Gaethje. Poirier seemed to catch a second wind, and worked his way back into the fight with his combination punching. Another Gaethje eye poke halted this barn burner, and resulted in a point deduction.

Poirier landed a a crisp right cross that sent Gaethje stumbling backwards, and the killer instinct took over. Poirier followed up with a big flurry, not allowing his opponent off the hook, and Gaethje was out on his feet, prompting the ref to step in and stop the fight. What a barn burner!
