Six months ago, Daniel Cormier was reeling from his second career loss when he was stopped by Jon Jones in the third round at UFC 214. On Saturday night in Boston, “DC” bounced back strong with a second-round stoppage win over fast-rising prospect Volkan Oezdemir.
What was the high point of the fight?
Coming into the fight, Oezdemir was looking to showcase his punching power that was on full display in his last fight against Jimi Manuwa. While he did get some good looks in the fight, Cormier’s championship experience prevailed, along with his patented wrestling prowess.
The champion’s advantage in the clinch and takedowns was in full effect, and it only got better for him once the fight hit the mat. Cormier ended the fight raining down punches from a mounted crucifix position, in which Oezdemir had no other options but to absorb the shots until the referee stepped in to stop the action.
Where do these two go from here?
Oezdemir was impressive in his streak on the way to the title, but as mentioned by Cormier himself, there are levels of the game. I believe he is still worthy of a top-ranking opponent for his next fight, and if he does prevail, get another crack at the title.
Cormier never shied away from the top contenders of his division, and the only sensible fight to make for him next would be a rematch against Alexander Gustafsson. It has been more than two years since they last fought to a split decision verdict, and it would be interesting to see how things would play out this time around.
Watch it now, later or never?
This fight was another classic showing of a 38-year-old Daniel Cormier edging a younger and formidable opponent. Watch it now and enjoy.
