Jon Jones’ knockout win over Daniel Cormier at UFC 214 might have been overturned to a No Contest (NC), but ‘DC’ still considers it the biggest defeat of his mixed martial arts career.
The result was overturned to a No Contest after it was revealed that Jones, the former light heavyweight champion, tested positive for Turinabol, an anabolic–androgenic steroid.
The news of Jones’ failed drug test wasn’t much of a consolation for Cormier, but the newly-reinstated LHW champ is willing to move on and let things go.
“I do [consider it a loss]. I just feel like I was in the fight. It sucks to lose. I can’t erase that memory,” Cormier told Duane Finley of Flo Combat in a recent interview. “I can’t expect people to erase that memory. So I’m just truthful with myself. I understand a lot of people want to tell me that I didn’t get a fair shake. ‘You didn’t get a fair shake D.C.’ but I am who I am and that’s why I am who I am today.
“When he left the first time, I was okay with Jon Jones being gone but people kept talking to me about him. That was the only time I really spoke of him but now I’ve got to let that go.
Cormier has hinted that 2018 could be his last year in the Octagon, but the former Olympian would be willing to fight Jones in a trilogy bout if he receives a light suspension and returns sooner than expected.
“If by some way he gets back before I’m done, great, we’ll fight again. But if not, I’m OK with the way that everything went down.”
Cormier is expected to defend his light heavyweight title against top contender Volkan Oezdemir at UFC 220. The blockbuster pay-per-view also features a headlining heavyweight championship bout between Stipe Miocic and Francis Ngannou and is scheduled to take place next year, Jan. 20 at TD Garden in Boston, Massachusetts.
