Britain’s MailOnline reports that Irish police are ‘aware’ of claims that UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor was involved in a bar brawl in Dublin involving three men. The UK tabloid referenced witnesses on social media to state that the brawl occurred at the Black Forge pub in Dublin’s Crumlin suburb.
That source further stated that McGregor was seen by bar patrons entering the Black Forge on Sunday night before a melee broke out inside. The alleged brawl involved a young man, a man in his 50s, and a fourth man.
The Mail article directly quotes an article from Ireland’s Independent.ie titled ‘Well-known Irish celebrity punches cartel associate in Dublin pub’. That article never names Conor McGregor as being involved in the alleged fracas.
The portion of the Independent article quoted by the Mail is as follows:
There is no report on this matter and no complaint from any injured parties, patrons of the pub or the pub itself and no statements were taken.
The remainder of the Independent.ie article makes stunning claims about the bar brawl. It alleges that the fight began when the unnamed celebrity assaulted a young man inside the pub. This, they claim, resulted in a man in his 50s stepping in and being punched by the celebrity. That man in his 50s is described as having close connections to a convicted drug dealer named Graham ‘The Wig’ Whelan.
According to Independent.ie Whelan is part of the Kinahan cartel, an organization connected to a number of violent incidents that have occurred in the past couple of years. These incidents include alleged targeted assassinations across Dublin in response to a shooting that occurred in January, 2016 at a boxing weigh-in.
The Independent.ie also claimed that the man in his 50s involved, who was allegedly punched in the Black Forge, was “completely innocent” and not known to have any involvement in criminal dealings. That outlet claimed, after attacking the man in his 50s, the ‘sports star’ was ushered out of the pub and driven away from the scene.
Gardai, Ireland’s national police force, are said to be not investigating the matter because they have not received an official complaint regarding the alleged fight. Independent.ie further stated that the Gardai believe the incident, ‘is linked to another alleged assault carried out by the sports star earlier this month.’
