Colby Covington has been the center of controversy this past month, ridiculing the entire country of Brazil and getting into an altercation with former UFC heavyweight champion Fabricio Werdum outside a hotel in Sydney, Australia.
Covington, the No. 3 ranked welterweight in the world, has also angled for a title fight against current UFC champ Tyron Woodley, but Ben Askren, who is a longtime teammate and friend of Woodley’s, believes the Californian is out of his element.
Speaking to Abhinav Kini of IBTimes UK ahead of his welterweight title defense against Shinya Aoki at ONE FC: Immortal Pursuit later today, Askren called Covington an ‘idiot’ and said it’s ‘embarrassing’ that he represents America.
“Colby Covington is an idiot. He is so stupid,” Askren said. “If he does [end up fighting Woodley], he’s going to get beat up.
“Colby Covington has a very low IQ, he says a lot of stupid things and it’s almost embarrassing that he represents our country that way.”
While Askren doesn’t believe Covington stands any chance against Woodley, who knocked out Robbie Lawler to win the welterweight title at UFC 201, ‘Funky’ believes Georges St-Pierre, the newly-crowned middleweight champ and former 170-pound champ, could put up a good fight against ‘T-Wood.’
“I think Georges St-Pierre should go down to fight Tyron Woodley,” Askren said. “I think he has a chance.
“I think he is a little scared [of Woodley’s power], he doesn’t like getting hit, but I think that would be a good fight. I think that’s what should happen.”
Askren, a multi-promotion champ, will defend his ONE FC welterweight title against feared submission wizard Shinya Aoki later today, Nov. 24, at the Singapore Indoor Stadium.
