For a good amount of time, Conor McGregor briefly turned his back on mixed martial arts to put his sole focus on boxing. In those weeks that he was preparing for his August 26th fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr., “The Notorious” was more about sharpening his jabs, crosses, hooks, and uppercuts, as his kicking, wrestling, and grappling training took a backseat.
McGregor is now primed to make his still undetermined UFC return. And even with that layoff from MMA training, his head coach John Kavanagh is still expecting great things from the 155-pound champion.
“To be honest, some of the things we’ve come away with from the Mayweather fight, some of the (improvements),” Kavanagh told The Daily Star’s Starsport. “When would an MMA guy have a chance to take six months just to focus on one aspect of MMA? Never is the answer, they’re always trying to work on everything.”
“But when he does return to the Octagon, his hands are going to be a lot better than what they were. And I’m excited to see that.”
As for the next opponent, Kavanagh now agrees with the idea of a unification title fight against interim champion Tony Ferguson.
“Tony is the interim champion, Conor is the champion, it’s the fight that makes sense,” Kavanagh said. “It’s the fight that has to happen.”
