Last month at a UFC event in Poland, Conor McGregor made waves when he used a homophobic slur to describe Team Alpha Male member Andre Fili. It was caught on camera, and McGregor subsequently apologized for the remark a couple of weeks later.
It was the latest in a string of incidents where fighters have used those types of slurs. Well it was until yesterday, when Jorge Masvidal used one while arguing with Michael Bisping – another fighter guilty of such things in the past.
Today, TMZ Sports spoke to UFC president Dana White about McGregor’s mistake, and he was blunt in saying that he wasn’t the only one:
“We’ve had a problem with that lately. It’s more than him, we’ve had a problem with that. It’s a thing you have to educate people on, and I’ve had my history with it myself. So it’s definitely a problem, and it’s something we need to focus on.”
He was then asked if McGregor’s apology was enough:
“What else are you gonna do? If you apologize and that’s not enough, what else can you do, you know what I mean? You can donate money, you can…whatever. I don’t know.”
When White says he has had a history of it himself, he’s referring to an incident in 2008 where he made very inappropriate remarks about MMA reporter Loretta Hunt in a video blog and used homophobic slurs multiple times to describe anonymous sources. He has stated since then that it was his only career regret while running the UFC.
