For his first title defense as the reinstated UFC light heavyweight champion, Daniel Cormier let the people decide on the opponent. As he announced via Twitter, the consensus was for him to face fast-rising star Volkan Oezdemir.
From his end, Oezdemir says he “feels blessed” to be called out by the champion, but that does not mean he will be taking the fight any lightly. During his appearance on Monday’s MMA Hour episode, the Swiss fighter will be looking to live up to his “No Time” nickname.
“It’s not going to be the best situation for him because I’ve got knockout power, that’s for sure. I hope his brain recovered well I’m going to bring the heat,” Oezdemir told Ariel Helwani (via MMA Fighting).
“I think in the first two minutes (I will finish the fight), that’s my goal anyway. I’m going to make all of my training so I will be able to knock him out. I have no time for this. I don’t want to get injured, I’m just going to knock him out really fast.”
The UFC has yet to finalize a date for this fight, but Oezdemir is certain that it will happen sooner than later.
“Yeah, we’re going to talk soon, but right now we are trying to promote the fight more,” Oezdemir said. “That fight is definitely going to happen. I want it for sure and I understand Cormier wants it also. So, yeah.”
Cormier was aware of what what his would-be challenger said during the interview, and offered an immediate response.
