Oscar De La Hoya has been quite outspoken about his disdain for the boxing match between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Conor McGregor. There are a few reasons – one of which is that he feels it reflects badly on the sport he loves, and it’s the one he’s trumpeted the most – but his real issue with it comes down to business.

As Golden Boy CEO, he’s very unhappy with the fact that this fight has stolen some thunder from another much-anticipated boxing match that he’s promoting – the bout between Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin on September 16th.

Oscar is no stranger to saying strange and outlandish things to promote his fights, but he rarely gets all that fired up about things. That changed with a tweet today, aimed directly at McGregor and Mayweather:

He deleted it about 20 minutes later, then re-posted the same tweet. Not sure why. Well, word got back to UFC president Dana White about the tweet, and he turned up his savageness with a response:

De La Hoya, a six-division boxing champion who retired in 2008, has publicly struggled with alcohol and cocaine dependence issues in the past. And with Dana being Dana, he’s not going to pull any punches when it comes to defending McGregor and this fight. The reference to Bob Arum, De La Hoya’s main competition and a frequent verbal sparring partner of White’s, put the icing on the cake.

Oscar’s tweet is also sort of funny because he has actively chased a boxing match between McGregor and Golden Boy-promoted Canelo in the past.

Mayweather and McGregor meet in a 12-round, 154-pound bout at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on August 26th.
