Although UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor is focused on Floyd Mayweather Jr., the Irishman is already planning his next move in the combat sports arena.
If McGregor, 29, does pull off the massive upset against ‘Money’ there’s been talk of him staying put in the boxing ring to take on another high-level champion.
But, McGregor hasn’t forgotten his mixed martial arts roots and the SBG Ireland product plans to return to the UFC in the near-future.
McGregor, who believes he will rule both boxing and MMA with an ‘iron left fist’, hinted at returning to the UFC to settle the score with Nate Diaz, who is the only fighter to beat the Dubliner under the UFC banner.
“Things always form,” McGregor said when asked how he could take his career to the next level after Aug. 26. “Fighters come and rise and create hype. We’ll see. There’s many options. I have a trilogy fight in waiting also, which would be a big fight.”
While McGregor didn’t mention Diaz’ name, he’s the only fighter available for a trilogy bout. The Californian submitted McGregor at UFC 196 but lost via majority decision in the epic welterweight rematch at UFC 202.
Diaz, 32, hasn’t fought since he lost to ‘The Notorious’ last year and the Cesar Gracie Jiu Jitsu student doesn’t seem too interested in returning against anyone not named McGregor.
McGregor has also hinted at fighting undefeated lightweight talent Khabib Nurmagomedov in his home country of Russia.
The Mayweather-McGregor boxing spectacle takes place this Saturday, August 26, at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
