Would the UFC ever set up a fight between their current heavyweight champion and the current light heavyweight champion? Well, they were apparently looking into the idea before news leaked that Jon Jones failed a drug test today. After Jones was provisionally suspended by USADA for failing an in-competition UFC 214 drug test before his fight with Daniel Cormier, UFC president Dana White spoke to some media about it. And following an expression of his disappointment, he dropped this nugget of information:
Dana says they were looking at Jones vs. Miocic in Detroit before today’s news.

A Jon Jones vs. Stipe Miocic fight would have been a pretty big deal for the Detroit show, which is UFC 218 in December. Jones had been angling for a bout with current WWE superstar and former UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar, but the latter still has time left on his own USADA suspension and the fight is unlikely anytime soon.
Jones actually stated afterward that a bout with Miocic isn’t something he wanted, beacuse it “wouldn’t even be a real superfight”. It appears the UFC disagreed.
Jones is likely to be stripped of his title again for the failure, which is suspended to be for the anabolic steroid turinabol, though White has stated that hasn’t formally happened as of yet.
