This Saturday, August 19, ESPN plays host to a rare beast in the world of modern boxing – a true unification fight. The match-up takes place in the 140 pound division where Terence Crawford (31-0; 22 KO) takes on Julius Indongo (22-0; 11 KO).
Crawford is a big name fighter at this point thanks to his series of wins on HBO, and here he takes on a not extremely well known, but undoubtedly dangerous opponent. Namibia’s Indongo comes in off a very good April win over Ricky Burns. But while Crawford is always a fighter to watch, what makes this fight unique is the title situation. Crawford is the 140 pound champion for WBC, WBO, Ring Magazine, and he’s the lineal division champ. Indongo holds the title for both the WBA and IBF. That means the winner of this fight will hold 100% of the major titles in the division. In this era of fractured alphabet organization belts, that’s nearly unheard of – currently no other division is even remotely close. History will be made Saturday night.
Also on the ESPN broadcast is must-watch undefeated Light Heavyweight Oleksandr Gvozdyk. Gvozdyk comes out of the superb Ukraine amateur program, and was a Bronze medalist at the 2012 Olympics. He takes on American Craig Baker, who has only had one fight in the past two years and is here to showcase Gvozdyk.
The night starts online at ESPN3, where prelims will stream starting at 6:30 p.m. ET. No word yet on exactly what fights will be on the prelim stream, but it’s a shockingly stacked undercard that features Nicholas Walters, Dillian Whyte, Bryant Jennings, and Mike Alvarado – hopefully lots of those will make it to the stream.
