Vasyl Lomachenko improved to 9-1, 7 KOs after demolishing Miguel Marriaga (25-3, 21 KOs) to defend his WBO junior lightweight (130 lbs) championship belt. Lomachenko was just so much better than Marriaga, and it was already expected that he’d easily beat him, but it’s still incredible to watch him perform. After Marriaga was knocked down in round 7, the second time he’d been dropped in the contest, Marriaga’s corner called the fight off. That’s the third time in a row a Lomachenko foe has been stopped between rounds, either through the fighter quitting or the corner stopping it.
Watch highlights of Lomachenko’s win at the bottom of the page. Here’s Mookie Alexander’s play-by-play of the last round:
Round 7 – Lomachenko probably should just get him out of there and let everyone go home. These body shots are brutal. He’s just straight-up bullying him. Marriaga eats another right hook. Two uppercuts by Lomachenko. Referee is taking a close look. Good lord what a body shot. Lomachenko is pouring it on and Marriaga is wobbly. More punches in bunches. Marriaga is staying upright but barely. Lomachenko may have accidentally hit himself on an uppercut. Straight left to the body, bolo punch, and then another left behind the ear sends Marriaga down. He easily beats the count but I don’t see the point in letting this continue. 70-61 Lomachenko.
It’s over. Fight was stopped between rounds.
