It took more than two years before Daniel Cormier and Jon Jones to meet for a second time in the Octagon, in a rivalry that has spanned since late 2014. Like in the first fight, Jones got his hand raised, but this time around, “Bones” finished the fight in dominant fashion.
What was the high point of the fight?
A different and more composed Daniel Cormier was actually on full display all throughout the fight and was actually landing significant shots of his own. But Jones relied on his experience and patience to weather the storm and found the perfect opening to land the left high kick.
Cormier’s frustration was understandable, especially since he did have a good chance to pull off a victory, had the fight continued, and him being given the chance to keep his pace up.
Where do these two go from here?
For Daniel Cormier and his fans, it was indeed a heartbreaking scenario to be in. But at the same time, he has established himself as a legitimate 205-champion, despite the argument and obvious fact that he was not able to beat the only man to deal him with the losses on his record.
“DC” did say during a pre-fight interview that he intends to continue fighting despite a loss, and I would expect him to still be competing against the top fighters in the light heavyweight division.
As for Jones, it would be very interesting to see how a match-up with Brock Lesnar unfolds. He just completed a noteworthy redemption story, got the title back, and is riding on a confidence high. Lesnar, of course, would need to have his suspension lifted first, and get clearance to fight again.
Watch it now, later, or never?
Forget his performance against Ovince Saint Preux, this was vintage Jon Jones work that should be seen immediately.
