Saturday’s Showtime Championship Boxing event is headlined by a battle between the undefeated Mikey Garcia, and a man ready to tell you he’s the best in the world – Adrien Broner. Here are the latest odds, courtesy of Bovada:
Mikey Garcia -210
Adrien Broner +170
Those are surprisingly close odds in a fight that really should favor Garcia. At 36-0, Garcia holds wins over some excellent names, including Rocky Martinez and Orlando Salido. He’s won world titles in 3 divisions, but unlike Broner (who has won in 4), he’s legitimately won them by climbing to the top of the division. Garcia did miss a large amount of ring time from 2014-2016, and he’s been a bit under the radar in his 2 fights back, though for those watching, he has shown no signs whatsoever of ring rust.
Broner certainly has not been under the radar – the outspoken fighter is always in the news, usually not for good reasons. Broner has two career losses, to Marcos Maidana and Shawn Porter. He’s a talented fighter – more talented than some of his detractors give him credit for. But he also has shown that despite his boasts, he struggles when he steps up to the highest levels. His best win probably remains his slightly contested 2013 decision win over Paulie Malignaggi, but that win kicked off a 1-3 slide for Malignaggi that only ended when he took a notable downgrade in opponent.
Perhaps it’s the time away, or perhaps it’s people buying into Broner’s claims, but he really should be the more significant underdog here. At -210, Garcia is a solid favorite pick.
Here are odds on the rest of the day’s fights:
Carl Frampton -3000
Andres Gutierrez +1100
Jarrell Miller -285
Gerald Washington +225
Katie Taylor -10000
Jasmine Clarkson +1600
Jermall Charlo -3500
Jorge Heiland +1200
Nothing much to see here. Frampton and Charlo have pretty basic softball opponents, while former Olympic Gold medalist Taylor is still very much in the early “easy match-up” phase of her career. The Heavyweight fight is the closest odds and understandably so. I like Miller there, but Washington is not the worst underdog bet. I still expect to see Miller take the win here, but if you’re just dying to take a shot at an underdog, Washington is your man.
And finally, our latest Mayweather vs. McGregor odds update:
Floyd Mayweather -600
Conor McGregor +400
Just how close will they get? It’s already far closer than I ever imagined, so let’s see what the final month brings.
