Chris Weidman vows to ‘slap Michael Bisping in the mouth’ for remark against his father

After his return to the winning track on Saturday night in his hometown of Long Island via a third-round submission victory over Kelvin Gastelum, Chris Weidman began a war of words with current middleweight champion Michael Bisping. Weidman first called out Bisping indirectly in his post-fight speech, which then escalated in a lengthy Twitter exchange.

The two men traded threw one verbal tirade after another at each other and it was punctuated by Bisping ripping on Weidman’s father during their post-fight celebration.

Weidman seemed unbothered by it at first when he responded to Bisping on Twitter. But during his appearance on Monday’s MMA Hour episode, he let out his real feelings about how his family was suddenly dragged into the conversation.

“The gloves are off with him,” Weidman told Ariel Helwani (via MMA Fighting). “He ripped up a Cuban flag right in Romero’s face between rounds during the guy’s fight for a championship (at UFC 213), so the guy doesn’t care about anything. And then right away, I do the cross-eyed thing, he comes right at my father, he comes at my family.”

“He can say anything he wants about me, he can talk about how ugly I am or anything about my face or my body or whatever, or my career. Come at me all you want. But this guy, then he comes after my father? So yeah, whatever, he’s an idiot.”

Weidman did admit that his father’s overly-excited actions at the time got to him a little. But at the end of it all, he feels slighted that Bisping had to go down that route, and is seeking payback for it.

“He definitely embarrasses me, but you can’t change your family. My dad is over 60 now, you’ve got to love people for who they are,” Weidman said. “He’s my dad and obviously he loves me and is supporting me, he’s happy for me, so it’s hard to control his emotions while I’m in the middle of a lot stuff going on, so it is what it is. At the end of the day, it doesn’t give Michael Bisping the right to open up his mouth.”

“I might go to Anaheim just to find Mr. Bisping, who wants to bring up my family,” Weidman continued, referring to Bisping’s analyst work for UFC 214’s FOX Sports broadcast. “I’m going to slap him in his mouth.”
