Throughout his career, Floyd Mayweather Jr. has been the one leading the pre-fight hype with his talking skills. This time around, he is facing Conor McGregor, a man who is equally proficient (if not better) on the mic.
The two men met face-to-face for the first time on Tuesday in Los Angeles for the fight’s kick-off press conference, and as expected, neither one let up with the trash talk. But after the media event, the elder Mayweather decided to get in on the verbal tirade trade when he crashed McGregor’s media scrum.
Floyd Sr., a former professional boxer himself, still seemed to have a lot of fight in him as he talked smack to McGregor from the audience area. He even went as far as challenging “The Notorious” to a fight.
“I will beat your ass my damn self,” Mayweather Sr. said. “I want my own date.”
In response, McGregor instead went on to lambaste both father and son, stating how it was a mistake for them to agree to the fight.
“Trust me, he got greedy here,” McGregor retorted back. “That was a big mistake (taking on the fight). You misadvised him. You should’ve kept him retired. It’s your fault!”
“Your boy is going to sleep, and he’s gonna look so good in his sleep, I know he is,” McGregor continued. “I’ll tell you what, though. He’s gonna wake up a better man, I promise you that.”
Mayweather Sr. carried on with his taunts, to which McGregor just had an answer to.
“You’re a fan, Floyd Sr. I know you’re a fan. I can see it in your eyes. You’re a fan of my sh-t,” McGregor said, which garnered laughs from the audience. “I know, I can see a fan when I f—king see one. You’re a fan. Someone send him a signed autograph.”
By the looks of things, McGregor seems to have had the slight edge on the talking game for day 1 of their four-city press tour. They are set to do it all over again on day 2 on Wednesday, July 12th in Toronto.
Mayweather vs. McGregor is scheduled for a 12-round 154-pound fight on August 26th at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
