August 26, 2017 will be the date that history is made when UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor steps inside the squared circle to take on undefeated boxing legend Floyd Mayweather, Jr. in a pay-per-view boxing match that is poised to break buyrate records. The bout took months of negotiation before an agreement was reached, but if things had gone south, Manny Pacquiao was ready to save the day by stepping in, according to Top Rank CEO Bob Arum (H/T MMA Junkie).
Pacquiao’s magnanimous offer wasn’t required, and in a recent interview with Yahoo, he launched some stinging bombs of irony toward the upcoming superfight:
“McGregor has no chance in this fight. In fact, it could be very boring. […] There is no way he will be able to land a meaningful punch on Floyd. How could he? He has no professional experience in boxing.”
He went on to praise the Saul “Canelo” Alvarez vs. Gennady “GGG” Golovkin fight as the better one to watch:
“The real fight and the best fight is Golovkin vs. Canelo. The best vs. the best. That’s the fight I will be watching.”
It should be noted that Floyd Mayweather’s second-to-last last win was over Pacquiao and saw the champion limit “Pacman” to just a 19% connect rate (complete stats here). While that fight broke the PPV record with 4.6 million buys, the biggest complaint among fans and pundits was that it was boring. The age-old adage “People in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones” springs to mind here.
