UFC 211: Miocic vs. Dos Santos 2 prelims live results, discussion, play by play

Tonight’s double main event will see Stipe Miocic defend his UFC heavyweight title against Junior dos Santos in a rematch, while Joanna Jedrzejczyk defends her strawweight title against Jessica Andrade.

This post will cover the preliminary card. The featured bout of the prelims features former lightweight champ Eddie Alvarez, who takes on Dustin Poirier.

The prelims kick off at approximately 6;30pm ET/3:30pm PT with three bouts on UFC Fight Pass. They then move over to FX (not FS1) at 8pm ET/5pm PT for the other four prelims bouts. The five-fight PPV kicks off at the normal starting time of 10pm ET/7pm PT, and are covered in a separate post. The full lineup and schedule follows. Eddie Alvarez vs. Dustin Poirier

Round 1 – Poirier with an inside leg kick. Body kick too. Alvarez is doing a lot of feinting. Lead right hook from Eddie. Check hook too. Not a lot of action through the first two minutes. Poirier with a jab and they trade kicks. Alvarez going to the body. Poirier stuffs a shot and lands a left. Alvarez rips him with a straight right. Right hook from Poirier in close. Straight left from Poirier, front kick from Alvarez. Poirier with a leg kick and a straight left. Another leg kick from Poirier. They trade shots in close. Alvarez with a head kick. Another. 10-9 Poirier.

Round 2 – Alvarez with a right hook. Another, and he backs Poirier off. Poirier looking for a standing choke, but Alvarez pops his head out and looks for a takedown against the cage. Can’t get it and they separate. Poirier with a nice jab. Nice short uppercut from Poirier. Alvarez with the lead right hook. Another jab from Poirier. Body kick too. Alvarez rips back with the right. Poirier hurts Alvarez with a left! He’s all over him! Alvarez is firing back, showing no fear. They’re brawling! Eddie’s back in it, even on wobbly legs! Eddie hurts Poirier and he’s all over him now! There’s so much happening I can’t even keep up! Alvarez is bleeding and still hurt. They both landed a ton of shots. Poirier looked for a front choke but couldn’t get it. Alvarez with another big shot and gets a takedown. Alvarez with two illegal knees. Oh no. Both were clearly illegal. Poirier has a huge cut underneath his eye. Dammit, the fight is over. There’s some confusion about what the result will be.

Jason Knight vs. Chas Skelly

Round 1 – Knight with a counter combo. Leg kick from Knight. Hard combo from Skelly. Skelly wraps him up and takes him down against the fence. Knight with an omoplata. Skelly manages to escape. He looks for a triangle that time, but Skelly escaped. He continues to work from the top. Now Knight looks for a gogoplata. Crazy. Skelly escapes that too. Knight with a kimura, but Skelly escapes that too and they return to the feet. Skelly with a counter right hook. Knight with some knees to the legs against the fence. He gets a takedown at the horn. 10-9 Knight.

Round 2 – Body kick from Skelly. Another kick, but it got caught and Knight dumped Skelly on his back. He let him up though. Two counter rights from Knight. They trade shots in the center. A Skelly kick had Knight off balance. The couter right keeps landing for Knight. Left hook from Skelly. Another lands. Skelly has a takedown attempt stuffed. Skelly’s really working against the cage but Knight is fighting him off. Short elbow from Knight. Skelly looked for a guillotine but gets tripped to the ground. Knight is cut open. They scramble and Knight is looking fir an armbar. They get up and Skelly lands three huge shots at the horn! 10-9 Knight.

Round 3 – Knight’s cut is on his cheek. They trade rights. An uppercut from Knight hurts Sherman! He’s down! Knight landed a ton of punches and this should be stopped! It finally is, but come on ref. That was so late.

Jason Knight defeated Chas Skelly by KO (strikes), :39 of round 3

Rashad Coulter vs. Chase Sherman

Round 1 – Sherman pawing with his hands and lands an inside leg kick. Coulter connects with a counter right. Outside leg kick by Sherman. They trade jabs. Counter with a hard right. Sherman with a combo. Sherman with two outside leg kicks and a nice combo. Front kick from Sherman. Sherman is lighting up his left leg with kicks. Nice left hook from Sherman. Coulter with a winging right. Coulter with two hard rights, Sherman responds with a jab. Another leg kick from Sherman. Another big right from Coulter. Sherman has Coulter limping from leg kicks. Another kick. Nice jab from Coulter. Sherman kicks the inside of the leg and went high. Another one and Coulter limps to his corner at the horn. 10-9 Sherman.

Round 2 – Coulter with a big right. Sherman with a knee and he kicks the leg again. He drops Coulter with a punch and he’s all over him on the ground. Coulter rolls over to turtle. Somehow he got up. They trade knees in the clinch. Coulter landed an elbow on the break and he’s throwing big rights. Sherman cracked the leg again. He can barely walk but he’s unloading with rights! This guy has a ton of heart! He’s really tired though. Sherman eats another right! Another one! Knee by Sherman and a left! Coulter with another one! This is insane. Sherman with a head kick. Left hook from Coulter. Sherman unloads with a crazy combo. They’re both tired. Sherman with a monstrous elbow and Coulter is FINALLY down and it’s over. That was a bonkers round.

Marco Polo Reyes vs. James Vick

Round 1 – Lots of moving and feinting so far. Jab from Vick. Combo punctuated by a leg kick from Reyes. They trade leg kicks. Reyes just out of range with his hands. Vick with a left, but Reyes lands a counter right hook. They clinch up and Vick lands a knee. Spinning back kick from Vick. A long right floors Reyes! Follow up hammerfists and it’s over. The ref was a little late.

Jessica Aguilar vs. Cortney Casey

Round 1 – Casey throwing a lot early. Aguilar trips her with the a leg kick and jumps on top. Aguilar all over here. Casey looking for a sub from the bottom. Aguilar stands up out of guard and kicks the legs. Casey tripped her and got up. Big rights from Casey. Five-punch combo from Casey that ends with a knee to teh body, but, Aguilar caught the knee and took her down. Again she stands over Casey and kicks her legs. She actually held onto a leg and kicked it, which is unique. Casey with an upkick that may have stunned Aguilar. She jumps into guard. Aguilar looked active, but bad referee stands them up. Aguilar clinches against the cage. Casey with a leg kick. Casey with a combo and an uppercut. Aguilar fires back. Aguilar clinches and lands knees to the body. Casey with a right and a head kick. Aguilar dropped him with a shot right at the horn or after the horn, I’m not sure. She didn’t go all the way down, it stumbled her. It was definitely late. 10-9 Casey.

Round 2 – Casey charges forward and lands a knee. Aguilar caught it and threw her down. Casey with an upkick. Aguilar eats another one as she makes her way into guard. She doesn’t get there though. Casey is landing a lot of upkicks and Aguilar is frustrated. Finally the ref got sick of that and stood Casey up. Hard combo from Casey. Hard straight right gets through. They brawl in close. Aguilar trying to fire back but she’s giving up reach. Aguilar caught a kick and put Casey on her back. Once again with the upkicks. Aguilar got stunned by one. This is strange. Casey is dominating her from her back. Aguilar just can’t get into her guard. She finally just flopped on her and worked from half. Aguilar with a forearm across the throat and some body kicks. 10-9 Casey.

Round 3 – Front kick and long combo from Casey. They trade right hooks. Aguilar lands another. Casey backs Aguilar into the fence. She keeps grabbing the cage. Uppercut from Casey and a big elbow. Aguilar’s face is bleeding. I think it’s out of her nose, and there’s a lot of it. Casey with cage pressure again. Aguilar reverses briefly, but Casey spun her back around and landed some hard punches. Long right and a knee to the body from Casey. Aguilar trying to charge in but Casey is tagging her. Uppercut from Casey. Aguilar scoops and single and throws her down, but Casey popped right back up. Aguilar clinches and lands a couple of knees. Aguilar with a straight right. Casey with a leg kick. They brawl. Aguilar still firing. 10-9 and 30-27 Casey.

Cortney Casey defeated Jessica Aguilar by unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27)

Enrique Barzola vs. Gabriel Benitez

Round 1 – Straight left and a hard leg kick from Benitez. Long straight right from Barzola. Hard kick from Benitez again. A straight left wobbles Barzola brieflyy. Huge body kick again. Barzola got a body lock though, picked him up, and slammed him to the mat. Benitez rolled out and away. Barzola with another takedown but Benitez gets up immediately. Head kick from Barzola. Straight left from Benitez. Inside leg kick from Barzola. Barzola wades in with a combo and slams Benitez down again. He’’s back up quick though. Straight left from Benitez. Right hook and a front kick from Barzola. The straight left is landing almost at will. Inside leg kick and body kick from Benitez. Counter right hook from Barzola and yet another slam . He’s landing some ground and pound. 10-9 Benitez but close.

Round 2 – Benitez with a left hook. Barzola comes forward with hands and gets a double leg takedown. Benitez scrambles and gets up. Benitez jabs and lands to the body. Winging right hook from Barzola and yet another takedown. Benitez immediately attacks an arm from the bottom but Barzola passes to half. Benitez back up though. Chopping inside leg kick to the calf from Benitez. Trip takedown from Barzola. Benitez up. Barzola with a single leg takedown, but only for a second. One-two and a body kick from Benitez. Barzola fires back with his own kick. Knee to the body from Barzola in the clinch. 10-9 Barzola.

Round 3 – They hug to start round three. Barzola presses with a right. Benitez with a body kick. Benitez slipped but got up quickly – only to be taken down by a double leg. Barzola lands a few ground strikes. Barzola takes his back and sinks both hooks. He’s looking to secure a choke while Benitez is trying to get up. He fights off the choke and gets up. Nice combo from Benitez and he’s showing some urgency. Head kick. Barzola brawling inside. Benitez has a head kick blocked. Benitez stuffs a takedown attempt, but Barzola is persistent. Benitez puts together a good combination and fights off another takedown attempt. Big right hook from Barzola. Takedown from Barzola. Benitez up after about 15 seconds. 30 seconds to go. Nice short uppercut from Barzola. Body kick from Benitez. Right hook from Barzola. Knee to the body and they brawl. Benitez drops Barzola with a left hook at the horn! He’s really wobbly, but it’s too late for Benitez. Wow, I’m not sure how to score this now. I’ll still go 10-9 and 29-28 Barzola.

Gadzhimurad Antigulov vs. Joachim Christensen

Round 1 – They landed at the same time, but Antigulov scooped a leg and took him down against the cage. Christensen got up to one knee and Antigulov looked to take his back. Body lock and he sinks a hook. He rolled through, secured the second hook, and has back control from the bottom. Christensen shook a hook off but Antigulov got it right back. He secured the choke and the fight is over. That’s a powerful guy.
