Conor McGregor has not been back in action since he won his second world title against Eddie Alvarez at UFC 205 in November. The McGregor camp has since directed all their attention to making a money-raking mega boxing match against Floyd Mayweather Jr.
“The Notorious”, however, has not closed his doors on a third fight against Nate Diaz, whom he faced twice in 2016 alone. Diaz, meanwhile, has also kept himself in the shelves since his rematch with McGregor at UFC 202 last August, and has turned down all subsequent fight offers, according to UFC president Dana White.
McGregor’s manager Audie Attar appeared on Monday’s edition of The MMA Hour and spoke about the Mayweather deal, among others. He also touched on the possible Diaz trilogy fight, where he also laid out a possible scenario to determine McGregor’s next challenger for the 155-pound belt.
“The Nate Diaz fight interests him,” Attar said. “Nate’s sitting on the sidelines (but) you’ve got to get Conor excited. If you want Conor to be excited about you, you gotta go in there and fight, if you want to fight him in the future. Nate Diaz vs. Tony Ferguson for the interim title, that creates narrative.”
“If this thing happens with Floyd, you gotta get Conor excited to get back in there with you.”
McGregor only got to enjoy being a simultaneous two-division world champion for a couple of weeks, after the UFC decided to strip him of his featherweight belt. But for his team, he remains to hold the accolade, unless someone gets to prove them otherwise.
“I see him being the featherweight and lightweight champion. I think someone has to beat him in order to really claim that from him, in my opinion.”
