Diego Sanchez vs Al Iaquinta was the co-headliner for this weekend’s UFC event in Nashville. Iaquinta was out for 2 years, but it didn’t take long for him to get a knockout finish over the long time UFC veteran.
What was the highlight of the fight?
The finish. It was quick, it was brutal. Once Iaquinta landed, Sanchez immediately went down. Sanchez, who is known for his heart, stood back up and tried to recover but yet another big blow from Iaquinta dropped him and ended it quick.
Where do these two go from here?
If he does return, there’s a ton of entertaining match ups for Iaquinta right now. But Iaquinta has had his issues with the UFC that also led to him going for a career change the past few years. He didn’t really take any damage here, but seems noncommittal on a quick turnaround. “I don’t know. I’m selling houses,” he said following the win. “If you’re selling a house, hit me up.”
Sanchez has been fighting for 15 years, and has taken an incredible amount of damage in the Octagon, and likely in training as well. I honestly prefer if he retires next. But if he decides to continue, I hope he faces a fellow vet in a senior circuit type of match up instead of being fed to younger, faster, and stronger contenders.
Watch now, later, or never?
It has a brutal finish, and didn’t last long, so go watch it now.
It’s over!!
