Nevada Commission downgrades Conor McGregor’s bottle throwing fine to $25k

Back in October 2016 a notably repentant Conor McGregor threw himself on the mercy of the Nevada Athletic Commission. That may have been a mistake.

The current UFC lightweight champion was fresh off a UFC 202 victory over Nate Diaz. But it wasn’t anything to do with the fight that got him in trouble. Instead it was a pre-fight press conference, which saw team Diaz and McGregor hurling bottles and cans at one another across a crowded room. No one was injured in the fracas, but it was an ugly public display.

And as such, the NAC wanted to make an example of McGregor, so they slapped him with one of their largest ever fines for a fighter involved in a press conference brawl – $150,000. Or more accurately, $75,000 and the expectation that McGregor would take part in a public service announcement which the commission valued at an additional $75,000. Either way you look at it, it was a hefty chunk of change.

The initial recommendation from the State Attorney General heading into the hearing was a fine of $25,000 and 25 hours of community service. After the much higher penalty was handed down, McGregor and his team appealed, asking that their case be reheard. On Wednesday, March 22nd it was.

And the new result? $25,000 and 25 hours of community service.

That’s not nothing, but it’s a lot more in line with the kind of punishments the NAC has handed down in the past.
