In case you missed it, this past Saturday night in Brooklyn, NY, a new division debuted at UFC 208, which resulted in the crowning of a brand new women’s featherweight champion—Germaine de Randamie. The problem is, there was a tornado of controversy surrounding the decision, with many in the community feeling the fight should have gone Holly Holm’s way, or at the very least, been a draw.
During the contest, there were two separate instances where de Randamie landed shots that were clearly after the bell. Referee Todd Anderson didn’t deduct a point for either instance. While the new champion adamantly denies they were intentional, Holm and her team feel they were, and are now going through the formalities of appealing the decision.
“It was blatant,” Holm’s agent Lenny Fresquez said. “Very blatant.”
MMA Fighting reports that Holm retained attorneys Paul Bardacke and Breanna Houghton with the intention of having a formal review of the fight, specifically referee Todd Anderson’s failure to deduct points after the late shots landed in the bout.
“We respectfully request the commission review referee Anderson’s failure to assess a foul and render a decision regarding a point deduction following Round 2, and failure to assess a foul and a point deduction following Round 3, and determine an appropriate result,” the complaint stated.
