Much like his rival in Conor McGregor, Jose Aldo has recently expressed interest in starting his boxing career. The main difference, is that the Brazilian UFC star doesn’t want a one-off super-fight with superstars such as Floyd Mayweather.
Aldo says he wants to be in it for the long run and is more than willing to take a more traditional path up the boxing ranks.
“First of all, it’s not about money. I want to keep it clear. Thank God the UFC and MMA gave me a lot of stuff,” Aldo told TV Combate, as translated by MMA Fighting. “Yes, I think about having a career in boxing, but I want to start from the bottom, start from zero. I want to get ranked and one day fight for a belt. I don’t want to fight just to fight, for money, to go after big fights and challenge a great champion.
“I respect every boxer, but I want to start from the bottom. I want a career in boxing. That was my biggest dream, to one day become champion in MMA and boxing. That is my biggest dream.”
Aldo has unsuccessfully tried to get out of his UFC contract this past year after being dissatisfied with the promotion. Their relationship seems to have improved quite a bit since then, but the fact remains that he is still under contract and will be turning 31 this year. By the time he actually becomes a free agent, he may be past his prime, and won’t have much time to “start from the bottom” in boxing.
