UFC 207: Nunes vs. Rousey prelims live results, discussion, play by play

The card features two title fights, with the headliner seeing UFC women’s bantamweight champion Amanda Nunes defending her title against returning superstar Ronda Rousey. The co-main is Dominick Cruz vs. Cody Garbrandt for the men’s 135-pound belt.

This post will cover the preliminary card. The featured prelim bout was supposed to take place in the welterweight division, where former champion Johny Hendricks meets Neil Magny. The bout will be contested at a cathweight now since Hendricks couldn’t make weight.

Live results and play-by-play will commence with the Fight Pass broadcast at 7:30pm ET/4:30pm PT for one fight. Then things move to FS1 at 8pm ET/5pm PT. The full lineup and schedule follows. Check out this week’s MMA Vivisection for predictions, analysis and betting odds on the each match up.

Tim Means vs. Alex Oliveira

Round 1 – Means with an outside leg kick. Oliveira charges forward but can’t land. He’s circling a lot now. Means misses with a spinning kick. Oliveira went for a takedown, but Means defended and ended up on top. Knee to the body and face as Oliveira comes up. Counter left from Means, right hook and body kick from Oliveira. Spinning back kick to the body put Means down! He’s up as Oliveira charges in. Lands a hard knee to Cowboy’s body. Oliveira with a takedown and takes his back. Means is up, but Oliveira is still stuck to his back. Means finally spins around and double legs Oliveira. Means lands an illegal knee while Oliveira is on the ground. Marc Ratner is arguing that the knee wasn’t illegal because Oliveira didn’t have his hands on the mat? What? A knee down is a knee down. After  long deliberation, the bout is being called a No Contest due to an “accidental” knee.

Niko Price vs. Brandon Thatch

Round 1 – Insde leg kick from Thatch. Now going to the outside. Thatch lands a knee inside when Price tries to get in close. Price with a big right and looking for a takedown. Thatch takes his back briefly, but Price has his leg still. He eventually gets a takedown against the cage. Thatch is looking for an arm, but can’t secure it. Price is looking to secure an arm triangle. Thatch tries to pop up but Price took his back and looked for a choke. Thatch rolled out, but now he’s back in an arm triangle. Thatch taps.

Alex Garcia vs. Mike Pyle

Round1 – Garcia looking to measure distance for the first 40 seconds. Pyle throwing out a jab. Garcia lands a heavy  body kick and gets a takedown. Garcia passed to side and worked there for a while. Pyle rolled away and got up halfway through the round. Garcia misses with a bight right and they clinch briefly. They trade left hooks. Garcia with a three-punch combo, and a right hook. Another right  hook and Pyle is out cold!

Antonio Carlos Junior vs. Marvin Vettori

Round 1 – The fight starts with an immediate eyepoke. Yay. Vettori asking for some time. After about two minutes they restart, but Vettori is still having trouble with it. Shoeface wit ha low kick. Three-punch combo from Vettori. Left body kick from Vettori. Another eye poke, or at least something close to one. Ref stoppage and a warning. Vettori eyepokes Carlos Junior now. That was kind of funny. Vettori with a hard body kick, but Shoeface catches it and looks for a takedown. Carlos Junior grinds away on the cage for a while before finally getting a takedown. Briefly. 10-9 Carlos Junior.

Round 2 – Shoeface with a quick takedown, but Vettori is up just as quickly. Inside leg kick from Carlos Junior. Vettori gets a bodylock from behind, but can’t get it to the ground and they separate. Vettori ducks under and lands a nice left hook. He gets a takedown against the cage. Big GnP. He’s looking for a guillotine, and a D’Arce. More big punches. He gets pushed off and upkicked. He jumps back into guard, then steps back out. 10-9 Vettori.

Round 3 – Vettori with a superman punch and wades into the clinch. Carlos Junior pins him against the cage. Shoeface gets a takedown. Can’t do much with it, and Vettori gets to his feet. Shoeface with a couple of knees. He’s still grinding on the fence. They separate with two minutes to go. A lot of staring. Vettori looked for a flying knee but slipped. Carlso Junior landed a right hook as he came up. He clinches up. He gets Vettori to one knee against the cage and takes his back. Shoeface with knees to the thigh. He lands a couple of punches and looked for a guillotine at the horn. 10-9 and 29-28 Carlos Junior.

Johny Hendricks vs. Neil Magny

Round 1 – Side kick from Magny. Hendricks just misses with a big left. A veritable plethora of kicks from Magny. Hendricks charges in. Body kick from Magny. Outside leg kick from both men. Not much happening. Hendricks steps in with a left. Magny bounces off the cage and lands a knee to the gut. Hendricks with a takedown. Magny locks him down. Magny more active from the bottom than Hendricks is from the top A couple of elbows from Hendricks now. Magny with a sweep attempt but the cage stopped it. Magny looking for a triangle. He secured it, but Hendricks isn’t in danger. Big elbows form Magny. 10-9 Magny.

Round 2 – Magny with a body shot. Hendricks gets a back bodylock and tries to drag Magny down. It works. He’s looking for a guillotine. Magny gets up after about 90 seconds, but gets put right back down. Knees to the legs from Hendricks while he grinds on the cage. Yet another takedown. Hendricks with some tepid ground and pound. Front headlock again as Magny comes up. Nice right. Magny back to his feet. Hendricks presses him against the cage for the last 10 seconds. 10-9 Hendricks.

Round 3 – Magny with a body kick. He steps in with a knee. Hendricks misses with the left. More kicks from Magny. Peppering him with jabs. Hendricks clinches up and gets a bodylock. Knees to the thighs. He can’t get a takedown this time though. Front kicks from Magny. Hendricks misses an uppercut. Hendricks starting to slow down. Long jab from Magny. Everything’s long when you have an 11-inch reach advantage. Head kick from Magny. Hendricks catches a body kick and scores with a left. Left hook into a double leg. Hendricks gets him to his knees with pure strength. Elbows from Magny. He’s up, but Hendricks is back on his legs. He picks Magny up, takes two steps, and dumps him on the mat. Magny almost got up but nope. Hendricks grinding away Magny secures a late triangle. Elbows. Good finish for Magny, is it enough? 10-9 and 29-28 Magny.
