Tyron Woodley still has his mind on a “money” fight for his next UFC welterweight title defense. The champion is looking to defend in early 2017, and he has an opponent in mind – Stockton’s finest, Nick Diaz. After an article was written detailing five possible opponents for Diaz now that he can fight again, Woodley responded on Twitter with clear interest in the bout at UFC 209:

Diaz was recently reinstated after his 18-month suspension ended and he finally came to an agreement with the Nevada Athletic Commission regarding an unpaid fine. He hasn’t won an official MMA bout in over five years, but he’s still a major draw.

There are two problems with this though. The first is that Woodley’s last title defense ended in a draw with Stephen Thompson. That likely means that Wonderboy will get the rematch he rightfully deserves. The other problem is that, while Diaz is a natural fit for UFC 209 (obviously), it has been strongly rumored that the UFC would rather set him up in a long-awaited rematch with Robbie Lawler. Diaz was the last man to stop Lawler by KO before Woodley, way back in 2004.

Either way, it appears that there will be some significant welterweight fights at UFC 209, which goes down on March 4th in Las Vegas. We should find out what the actual matchups end up being fairly soon.
