What more can be said about how good UFC 205 has the potential to be? Few cards have ever been as star studded as this; the UFC’s first ever event held in New York City. The main event pits UFC lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez versus UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor at 155lbs. Can McGregor make history and become the only fighter to hold belts in two UFC weight classes at the same time or will Alvarez defend his title and continue his reign atop the sport’s most cutthroat division?
The remainder of the pay-per-view card features fights which could easily headline their own events. Before Alvarez and McGregor settle their business, the UFC welterweight title is on the line as champion Tyron Woodley takes on challenger Stephen ‘Wonderboy’ Thompson. And before that there’s another title fight: the women’s strawweight championship, which is an all Polish affair with Joanna Jedrzejczyk defending versus Karolina Kowalkiewicz. Before the belts are battled over Former UFC champion Chris Weidman faces Olympic silver medalist Yoel Romero in a tilt with immediate middleweight title implications. To open the PPV former UFC champ Miesha Tate will clash with the streaking Raquel Pennington in the women’s bantamweight division.
The four-fight preliminary card on Fox Sports 1 begins at 8:00 PM ET. This portion of the event has taken some damage, but it’s still an A+ card. The headlining prelim sees another former UFC champ Frankie Edgar looking to hold onto his place among the title challengers at featherweight. Trying to take his place is Jeremy Stephens, who is eager to show one of the headlining fighters who the heck he is. Before that fight there’s another bout that could shake up an entire division. Khabib Nurmagomedov will put his undefeated record on the line against Michael Johnson, who is desperate to show he – and not Khabib – is the heir apparent for the lightweight throne. Before those stellar match-ups there’s a fun middleweight affair between Rafael Natal and Tim Boetsch and a sleeper fight between prospects Vicente Luque and Belal Muhammad at 170lbs.
As always the night kicks off with the UFC Fight Pass early prelims, which tonight begin at 7:00PM ET. The featured Fight Pass prelim is Jim Miller versus Thiago Alves in a catchweight bout (due to food poisoning?). MSG’s curtain opener has the trailblazing Liz Carmouche meeting the unheralded, yet potentially dangerous, Katlyn Chookagian.
Here’s how you can watch all of tonight’s action.
