Mickey Gall looked impressive yet again in his highly anticipated UFC 203 main card showdown with CM Punk on Saturday night. The 24-year-old quickly took the former WWE champion down, bloodied him up with ground-and-pound, and eventually sunk in a rear-naked-choke.
Gall was also impressive on the microphone after the victory. During his post-fight interview with UFC commentator Joe Rogan, he called out lightweight up-and-comer Sage Northcutt.
“I got someone I want next,” Gall said. “The fight everyone wants to see — I want “Super” Sage Northcutt, I think that boy’s corny; I want to punch the spikes out of his hair. They say we’re “Dana White: Lookin’ For A Fight” young guns; let us bang out. They say guys like us (fighters from White’s reality show) might get protection, but f-ck that. I want war!”
For this fight to even come close to happening, of course, Northcutt would have to move up to the welterweight division. He did so against Bryan Barberena earlier this year, which resulted in his first professional loss, but only because Barberena stepped up on short notice. Northcutt returned to 155 pounds at UFC 200 in July.
That said, it sounds like Northcutt is willing to return to 170 pounds to fight Gall. In a backstage interview with Megan Olivi, UFC president Dana White said that Northcutt’s team expressed interest in the matchup immediately after Gall’s win over Punk.
“After [Gall] called [Northcutt] out, Sage’s team hit me up and they want the fight. So we’ll make it happen,” White said.
UFC 203 took place live from the Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland on Saturday. UFC heavyweight champ Stipe Miocic successfully defended his belt for the first time with a first-round knockout of Alistair Overeem.
