Video: Documentary trailer shows Cyborg’s weight cut struggles ahead of UFC 198

For years now, Cristiane Justino – known largely to fans as Cris Cyborg – has been one of the most feared fighters on the planet, remaining dominant as the reigning top women’s featherweight in MMA. But since the rise of Ronda Rousey and the popularity of the UFC women’s bantamweight division, the bigger question has been whether or not Cyborg can make the drop to 135, largely in hopes of a superfight with the aforementioned Rousey.

Since the purchase of Strikeforce, Cris Cyborg’s suspension due to PED use, and her decision to sign with Invicta FC despite being made an offer by the UFC, Cyborg has remained adamant that she cannot make the drop to 135lbs. Instead, insisting on fighting at 140lbs and no lower than that.

So when she was announced as being on the UFC 198 card against Leslie Smith, it was an interesting development not only because she would finally be making an appearance in the sport’s premier organization, but because she’d be fighting in a weight class lower than 145lbs for the first time since reaching international notoriety. And now, an upcoming documentary from Genghis Con Films shows just how that ordeal went, as well as other behind the scenes footage and the lead up to the fight itself.

The full documentary is slated for release later this month, and we’ve got the trailer right here. There should be a lot to look forward to, as previous work from this crew includes the very entertaining and insightful Phuket Dreaming, covering the MMA scene out of Tiger Muay Thai in Phuket, Thailand.

Here’s the trailer, as promised (weight cut portion begins ~0:23)

Cyborg is slated to face kickboxer-turned-MMA fighter Lina Lansberg in the main event of Ultimate Fight Night 95 on September 24th, from the Brazilian capital of Brasilia. The bout will also be contested at a 140lb catchweight.
