While Frankie Edgar has his hands full with Jose Aldo at UFC 200’s blockbuster PPV on July 9, ‘The Answer’ is looking to secure a fight with featherweight champion Conor McGregor at Madison Square Garden arena.
Edgar, a former lightweight champion who will rematch ‘Scarface’ for the interim 145-pound title next month, wants to make history in New York. UFC 205, a landmark pay-per-view set to host the promotion’s debut show at MSG, is scheduled for Nov. 12 and Edgar wants to headline the event against ‘The Notorious’.
“You can’t write something better than that,” Edgar said on Monday’s edition of The MMA Hour, per MMA Fighting’s Dave Doyle. “Why wouldn’t Conor want to fight at MSG? There’s definitely a big Irish contingency in New York and it could be possibly biggest fight UFC history.”
McGregor captured the FW belt in record-setting time at UFC 194, knocking out long-time champ Aldo just thirteen seconds into the first round. Following the win, the Irishman immediately announced his move up to the lightweight division to take on champion Rafael dos Anjos. Dos Anjos, however, was forced to pull out of the bout at the last minute due to a broken foot and McGregor jumped up another weight class to take on Nate Diaz.
After a back-and-forth affair, McGregor was submitted in the second round and will rematch Diaz – again at welterweight – at UFC 202 on August 20.
Edgar says McGregor’s move up to welterweight is calculated, and believes the SBG Ireland product has more to lose in his championship weight class.
“At ’45, he has everything to lose,” Edgar said. “At ’70 he has nothing to lose, even though Nate is a ’55 pounder and they decided not to cut weight, so they can market going up two weight classes which is ridiculous since he’s a 55 pounder … at ’45, if he loses, he has nothing. He has a hard time making the weight. If he goes to 55 he’s not going to be in the title talks for awhile.”
Edgar, who lost in a competitive unanimous decision to Aldo at UFC 156, will rematch the Brazilian for the interim featherweight title at UFC 200. The mega-PPV, which will see Brock Lesnar return to the Octagon against Mark Hunt, takes place at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada on July 9.
