A highly anticipated welterweight rematch between Nate Diaz and current UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor is set to headline UFC 202 later this summer. The news was officially announced during the UFC 199 pay-per-view broadcast on Saturday night, following a report from MMAFighting.com.
Diaz and McGregor first met in the main event of UFC 196 this past March and the Stockton-native pulled off the shocking upset, submitting the Irishman in the second round. UFC officials instantly booked the rematch for next month’s UFC 200, but later pulled McGregor from the fight for refusing to do promotional work.
McGregor (19-3), prior to the Diaz fight, captured the featherweight belt at UFC 194 last December when he knocked out Jose Aldo in 13-seconds. Before that, he stopped Chad Mendes to win the interim strap.
Diaz (19-10), prior to his most recent fight, returned last December and picked up an upset decision win over lightweight contender Michael Johnson. He had been out of action since a late 2014 loss to current lightweight champ Rafael dos Anjos.
UFC 202 takes place in Las Vegas on Aug. 20. Watch the official announcement and the first teaser below.
