Reports have floated around since the past week about a possible super fight between UFC featherweight champ Conor McGregor and retired undefeated boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr.
The UFC had already dismissed the idea, but early this week, both fighters have alluded to the possibility that the said reports may actually be true.
The current match-up is still a laughable idea for many in the combat sports circle, but it is still being entertained, to say the least. Veteran trainer Freddie Roach has apparently gotten calls about training McGregor, and he says he is actually willing to do so, but with a catch.
“I’ll help him, I like helping people,” Roach told Marcos Villegas of Fight Hub TV. “But I’m not gonna train him to fight Mayweather. I’ll have to train him for at least three years to get him ready to fight Mayweather.”
Roach also pointed out the obvious differences between boxing and MMA, and his ineptness to train fighters in certain aspects such as the ground game.
“If an MMA fighter gets me to the ground, I don’t know how to get submission holds. I won’t quit. He’ll have to break my arm before I tap out. I will have a broken arm, though.”
“See, because in boxing, we’re not allowed to quit,” he added. “In MMA, you’re allowed to surrender. That’s a big difference also. I don’t like the ground game as much as I like the stand-up game better. The most exciting part about MMA and UFC is the stand-up. It’s just the way it is.”
Villegas later revealed that the call to Roach was likely a prank.
