After a career defining year in 2015, things haven’t quite went to plan for Crumlin’s Conor McGregor this year. In March, he was submitted in the second round by Nate Diaz. In April, he abruptly retired and was subsequently pulled from UFC 200, amid a disagreement with the UFC. To compound McGregor’s professional troubles, his personal life seems to be facing challenges of its own.
According to reports in Ireland, Conor McGregor has hired a 24/7 security team amid death threats and they were with him at an awards ceremony in Dublin last week.
Sources told the IrishMirror.ie that McGregor was surrounded by his new security team all night at the VIP Style Awards:
“He’d two huge minders with him for the entire evening and although everyone was in great form, they didn’t leave his side once. One of them even waited directly outside the toilets when he nipped in at one stage. Conor was really relaxed and in great humour but the bodyguards didn’t let him out of their sight for even a minute.Anyone who wanted a picture or a quick word with Conor had to go through the minders. He told people their names were Rocky and Drago and that he’d hired them because of death threats.”
McGregor’s next steps are currently unknown. While the UFC are reportedly aiming for their star to appear on the UFC 201 or 202 pay-per-view card, McGregor and Floyd Mayweather have been teasing a potential boxing super-fight.
