In the lead-up to Saturday’s Canelo Alvarez (46-1-1, 32 KOs) vs. Amir Khan (31-3, 19 KOs) showdown at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, HBO has uploaded a couple of free fight videos showcasing the two pay-per-view headliners. To watch Canelo’s win vs. Miguel Cotto, click here.
If there’s one fight that stands out as Amir Khan’s most entertaining bout of his career, it’s his unanimous decision win over Argentina’s Marcos Maidana. In December 2010, Khan put his WBA world 140 lbs championship belt on the line against Maidana at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas, Nevada. It looked like Khan would get the stunning opening round stoppage with a vicious body shot knockdown, but Maidana gamely got up and saw out the round. Maidana was docked a point for throwing an elbow in the 5th, and at the halfway mark, it looked like Khan would cruise to victory.
As the Briton would soon find out, Maidana would not go away quietly. Khan’s chin was put to the test in round 10, as a massive right hand had Khan on wobbly legs. An onslaught of winging punches ensued, with Khan refusing to hold and continuing to exchange while hurt. Amazingly, Khan saw out the round against a big puncher, and hung on for a unanimous decision win (114-111 x2, 113-112). While Khan’s chin has been called into question on numerous occasions, staying upright in the face of all he was battered with in the 10th is nothing to sniff at. Boxing Writers Association of America voted this thriller as the Fight of the Year.
