The UFC is back in Australia with a big FS1 card, headlined by heavyweights Mark Hunt and Frank Mir. Before they could enter the Octagon, two Welterweight contenders in Hector Lombard and Neil Magny stepped into the cage in front of the Brisbane crowd.
Lombard immediately bull rushed Magny, dropping him against the cage just seconds into the fight. He followed it up with vicious ground and pound that seriously hurt Magny. Somehow Magny was able to continue to defend himself while getting smashed against the cage. Lombard slowed down and settled in Magny’s guard. Magny was able to get out and get back to his feet. After getting obliterated on the ground, Magny landed a couple of big punches on the feet, but a big punch by Lombard quickly forced Magny to shoot for the takedown. Lombard easily stuffed the takedown, landing in Magny’s guard. The round ended with Mangy getting the fight back to the feet and landing a couple of punching combinations. It’s safe to say that Magny was lucky to survive the round.
Magny was able to take control in the beginning of the second round, picking Lombard apart with jabs from range and knees in the clinch. Momentum swung back to Lombard’s favor when he hit a huge looping punch that sent Magny to the canvas. Lombard fell into Magny’s guard, but Magny quickly threw up his legs and locked on a tight triangle choke. Lombard defended and in the scramble was mounted by Magny. The last minute of the round consisted of Magny on Lombard’s back, punishing him with big punches. The ref gave Lombard the same benefit that he gave Magny in the first round, allowing him to take ample punishement without a stoppage.
In the third round Magny immediately took Lombard to the mat, got a full mount triangle and rained down elbows and punches, leading to the stoppage.
