Conor McGregor handpicked Nate Diaz as his UFC 196 opponent. That didn’t turn out to be the best decision for the UFC featherweight champion. Diaz took a beating from Conor in their welterweight bout, but Diaz turned it up in the second round and hurt McGregor, which led to a submission victory for Stockton’s finest in the headliner.
Conor’s straight left and the left hook were on full display in the first round, and he was leaning for a lot of uppercuts as well. Diaz was pumping the jab and connected with some nice rights, but seemed affected by a small cut opened over his right eye. Conor actually reversed Nate on the ground late in the round and was willing to engage, but time ran out.
In the second, Diaz stepped up his game pretty much immediately. Conor was still connecting with the left and the right uppercut , but Diaz kept peppering him with the jab and actually hurt Conor with a right. McGregor did his best to not sell it, but he backed off. Diaz kept it up, and McGregor wobbled.
Diaz smiled.
McGregor initiated a takedown, and Diaz ate him up on the ground. He went for a guillotine, then spun around and rook his back. Sunk the choke.
Game over.
