After some considerable backlash from his controversial statements saying that same-sex marriage “makes us worse than animals”, Manny Pacquiao has issued an apology on social media.
“I’m sorry for hurting people by comparing homosexuals to animals. Please forgive me for those I’ve hurt,” Pacquiao wrote. “I still stand on my belief that I’m against same sex marriage because of what the Bible says, but I’m not condemning LGBT. I love you all with the love of the Lord. God Bless you all and I’m praying for you.”
The boxer, who is running for a Senate seat in the Philippines, also sent out snippets of video to accompany that statement.
“Hello everyone, thank you for the prayers and support,” Pacquiao said in Filipino. “I would like to apologize to everyone who got hurt with me comparing humans and animals. That’s my mistake, and I would like to say sorry to everyone who got hurt.”
“I am not changing my decision to be against same-sex marriage. That is my belief,” he said. “My only mistake is that I compared humans to animals. I apologize. I’m humbling myself before you, and before god for my mistake. Thank you and god bless.”
It is also interesting to note that before deciding to send out an official apology, Pacquiao posted this on instagram a couple of hours earlier:
“I rather obey the Lord’s command than obeying the desires of the flesh. I’m not condemning anyone, but I’m just telling the truth of what the Bible says. The truth from the Bible is what changed me from my old ways.”
“1 Corinthians 6:9 [9] Or do you not know that wrongdoers will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor men who have sex with men.” God Bless everyone i love you all.”
Pacquiao is a Congressman of Sarangani, and will be running for Senator this year. His wife, Jinkee, is a Vice Governor in the same province.
