Robbie Lawler on GSP return: ‘I’ll believe it when I see it’

Robbie Lawler isn’t concerned about much these days. The UFC welterweight champion managed to keep his title by the thinnest of margins in a Fight of the Year contender against Carlos Condit last month, and he’s just been concentrating on himself since then.

In a recent media scrum (via MMA Fighting), he mostly avoided questions about other fighters by stating that he was just doing his thing and his opponents were up to the UFC. He did drop one interesting statement about former champ Georges St-Pierre though, who has been rumored to return to the UFC. When asked if he should get an immediate title shot upon his return, Lawler had this to say:

“I am not in charge of the UFC and who fights and whatnot. I mean, obviously they might be excited about it. But I’m just…I’ll believe it when I see it. I just concentrate on numero uno.”

Other than that, it was mostly stock answers from the champ.

On a possible bout with Conor McGregor:

“It’s like one of those things where I don’t really concentrate on all the hoopla around me, and this guy and that guy and those kinds of things. That’s kind of like for the fans, and the UFC to kind of decide, and I just show up and work every day.”

On the UFC rankings:

“I don’t pay attention to it. Obviously it’s relevant to somebody. You’re talking about it right now so it’s relevant to a certain extent. I just let the UFC kinda tell me, and we talk, and we communicate, and they tell me who I’m fighting and I show up.”

He also talked about the war with Condit, how quickly he was back in the gym after that, what he thinks about the damage he’s taken in his last few fights, why he won’t be returning to the octagon for a while, and a few other things. You can check out the full scrum above.
