The Nevada Athletic Commission and Nick Diaz have settled on an agreement that will see Diaz’s suspension and fine reduced significantly.
During today’s NAC hearing, the commission unanimously approved of the settlement. The details of the settlement were not released to the public. According to MMAFighting.com, the settlement reduced Diaz’s suspension from 5 years to 18 months, and his fine from $165,000 to $100,000.
The initial suspension caused mass outrage in the MMA community. Diaz was suspended for a failed drug test taken around his fight at UFC 183 against Anderson Silva. The controversy surrounding the case involved two clean tests taken by Diaz, both accredited by the World Anti-Doping Agency. The one failed test came from a non-accredited WADA lab.
Silva was suspended for 1 year by the NAC after failing both in and out of competition drug tests for UFC 183. The tests found two anabolic steroids, androstane and drostanolone, in Silva’s system. Silva will return to action on February 27th against Michael Bisping.
The reduce in suspension means that Nick Diaz will complete his suspension on July 31st, 2016. Diaz was not in attendance at today’s NAC hearing.
