As advertised and as expected, Robbie Lawler and Carlos Condit threw down for 25 minutes with welterweight gold on the line in the main event of UFC 195 on Saturday night. Lawler was able to edge out Condit, defeating him by a very close split decision in an instant classic and a fantastic way to kick off 2016.

What was the high point of this fight?

The high point of this fight was the entire fifth round, undeniably. Although the first four rounds were entertaining, the fifth was thrilling. “Ruthless” went out there believing the fight was either tied or he was down on the scorecards and looked and looked for the knockout. The champion came very close to finishing off “The Natural Born Killer,” but couldn’t quite get the job done. Despite that, he was still awarded the decision afterwards.

Where do these two go from here?

Many fans and media members scored the fight for Condit, so I’d be completely okay with an automatic rematch. A title defense against Tyron Woodley makes sense for Lawler, but the Condit rematch is more appealing to me, and still makes sense as it was a somewhat controversial decision. With that being said, Condit said post-fight he is contemplating retirement, so this could’ve been the last time we see the former UFC interim titleholder compete inside the Octagon. If he does indeed step away, the UFC matchmakers should book the Lawler vs. Woodley bout, but if not, I’m fine with a rematch.

Watch now, later, or never?

Fight of the Year candidate on the second day of 2016? Yeah, I’d watch right now if I were you.
