Frankie Edgar defeated Chad Mendes by knockout (punches), 2:28 of round one

If there was any reason why Frankie Edgar didn’t deserve another shot at the featherweight title, all that doubt was erased tonight in Las Vegas. The New Jersey native entered his headlining bout with Chad Mendes at the TUF 22 Finale with a beast in front of him, one with well-known power in his hands. But it wasn’t Mendes’ power on display tonight – it was Frankie’s. He knocked Mendes out in less than three minutes.

Mendes opened with some heavy kicks to the inside and outside of Frankie’s leg. He continued to rip away, while Edgar looked to fire back with his own kicks. Mendes went for a big telegraphed uppercut, which Edgar deftly countered. Mendes fired back with a right though.

Another heavy leg kick from Mendes led into a big exchange in the pocket a few seconds later, and that’s where Edgar clocked him. After scoring with a left, he cracked him with a huge left hook right on the nose, which buckled Mendes’ legs and he went down. Mendes looked to be out, but Edgar landed a couple more punches to make sure before John McCarthy jumped in.

Mendes popped up quickly, but it was a good stoppage.

The finish came at the 2:28 mark of the first round.
