Manager: Holly Holm angling for first title defense against Miesha Tate, not Rousey

According to Ronda Rousey, it may take up to six months before she can begin to eat an apple. The Olympic bronze medalist suffered a devastating KO loss to Holly Holm last month at UFC 193, and it’s expected that “Rowdy” will be out of action for the foreseeable future.

Holm, who became the first female boxing world champion to win a UFC title, left with the bantamweight belt injury-free and wants to get back into the Octagon as soon as possible.

“The Preacher’s Daughter’s” manager, Lenny Fresquez, believes Miesha Tate should be next in line for a title shot due to Ronda’s absence from the sport.

“I’m not sure Ronda will be ready for a July fight,” Fresquez told Lance Pugmire of the Los Angeles Times. “She took a severe beating, and I don’t think it’s in her best interest to take the next fight so fast. They told me she’s been ready and cleared, but Holly’s used to staying active. We’re from the old school, and we believe the No. 1 contender is there for a reason. … [Tate] deserves a shot, but it’s not for me to decide.”

Fresquez anticipates that Holm will be able to defend her championship by February and believes “Cupcake” is the best available opponent.

“Holly’s not so much about the money as [much as thinking] she wants to fight,” Fresquez said. “We’d like to fight Miesha. We understand there are risks, but Holly’s a dominant champion, and she wants to fight the best. Right now, Miesha is the best.”

Since losing to Ronda Rousey in 2013, Miesha Tate has amassed a four-fight win streak and catapulted to the top of the women’s 135 lbs. division. The 29-year-old was expected to rematch Ronda at UFC 193, but the head brass decided Holly Holm vs. Ronda Rousey was best for business.
