UFC 194 features two major championship fights in Jose Aldo vs. Conor McGregor and Chris Weidman vs. Luke Rockhold. With so much being on the line, having a veteran referee overseeing the action is good news for all parties.
One of the most highly touted and respected referees in the business, “Big” John McCarthy, will be in charge of the action for the UFC Featherweight Championship fight between Jose Aldo and Conor McGregor. The decision was made at Monday’s Neveada Athletic Commission meeting.
This will be the 5th UFC Championship fight that McCarthy has refereed this year, the other four being Ronda Rousey vs. Cat Zingano, Daniel Cormier vs. Anthony Johnson, Robbie Lawler vs. Rory MacDonald and Ronda Rousey vs. Bethe Correia. (via Tapology)
The co-main event between Chris Weidman and Luke Rockhold will be overseen by another longtime referee in Herb Dean. This will be the 9th UFC Championship fight that Dean has refereed this year, the most notable being the recent shocking upset at UFC 193 between Ronda Rousey and Holly Holm.
Here are the other UFC Championship fights that Dean has refereed this year: Jon Jones vs. Daniel Cormier, Chris Weidman vs. Vitor Belfort, Fabricio Werdum vs. Cain Velasquez, Conor McGregor vs. Chad Mendes, T.J. Dillashaw vs. Renan Barao, Demetrious Johnson vs. John Dodson and Daniel Cormier vs. Alexander Gustafsson.
UFC 194 takes place in Las Vegas, NV at the MGM Grand Garden. The main card also features fights between Yoel Romero and Ronaldo Souza, Demian Maia and Gunnar Nelson, with Max Holloway and Jeremy Stephens kicking off the card.
