Floyd Mayweather (49-0, 26 KOs) says he’s retired from boxing (he’s said this before) after defeating Manny Pacquiao and Andre Berto to finish up his Showtime contract. There’s been a built up “rivalry” between Floyd and former UFC women’s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey, to the point where someone ridiculously suggested that they set up a superfight under MMA rules. Barbs have been traded back-and-forth between the two, with Mayweather most recently voicing his displeasure over Rousey being on the cover of boxing’s RING magazine.
While Mayweather will end his career undefeated, Rousey will not, as she obviously was knocked out brutally by Holly Holm at UFC 193. Rapper 50 Cent went on Instagram to post a picture of Rousey’s face replacing that of a dying Apollo Creed in Rocky IV, and wrote the caption “LMAO FLOYD TOLD ME TO POST THIS.”
Mayweather has since denied 50 Cent’s claim in a recent interview with FightHype. In fact, Mayweather came to Rousey’s defense as fans who reveled in her upset defeat went as far as to taunt her on social media and make crude GIFs and memes out of her fight.
“I don’t think it’s cool how everyone is trolling her on social media. Certain things you have to learn. People will love you on Friday and then Sunday morning, it’s nothing but negative comments and people making jokes and people making fun about you, which I don’t think is cool. I’ve never been on the other side, so I don’t know how it feels. I’m pretty sure she’s a very, very strong person, but we still have to take into consideration that she has feelings,” Mayweather explained. “Everything happens for a reason. This was already written. Listen, if God says, ‘In Floyd’s career, I don’t want him to lose,’ you know what? I wasn’t going to lose. That doesn’t mean that I haven’t took a loss before. I’m not talking about boxing; I’m just talking about life. When you lose a loved one, that’s taking a loss. I think that everything is just a learning experience. In due time, she’ll be able to bounce back and make some noise again in mixed martial arts.”
Hey, it’s a hell of a turnaround from just one year ago, when he said “I don’t know who he is,” when asked about Rousey.
