While Nick Diaz is currently in settlement talks with the Nevada Athletic Commission to cut down his 5-year suspension, and could be back in the Octagon as early as next year, UFC women’s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey still insisted on sharing her thoughts on the earlier injustice.
“You know what it reminds me of? It reminds me of, say you got a parking ticket, and you didn’t pay for it, and then you got another parking ticket and you didn’t pay for it … no matter how many parking tickets, no matter how long you don’t pay for it, you never deserve life in prison,” Rousey said at a media day at Glendale Fighting Club (transcription via MMA Junkie). “Yeah, you could be a repeat offender and not be paying it, and whatever – you could do all of the worst things that could ever be associated with parking tickets, but at the end of the day, it’s a parking ticket and you don’t deserve life in jail.”
Nick Diaz tested positive for marijuana metabolites after his UFC 183 headliner against Anderson Silva in January, and received a 5-year suspension as well as a $165,000 fine by the NAC in September.
“They’re pretty much trying to keep him from fighting ever again – five years is really the rest of the shelf life that he has,” Rousey said. “I think the punishment was cruel, and people know that. I don’t think they should be testing for weed at all. It has nothing to do with sports. They keep saying, ‘oh it’s for the safety of the fighters, we make sure the fighters don’t get in there high and get injured’. Really? Then why are you not testing us, making sure we’re not drunk? Why are they testing one thing and not the other? You should test for performance enhancing drugs only.” (Transcription by Bloody Elbow)
Is Rousey suggesting that the commission should test for all sorts of recreational drugs, including alcohol, or not test for any recreational drugs at all?
