It’s been two years since UFC welterweight kingpin Georges St-Pierre retired. The Canadian decided to vacate the 170 lbs. title after beating Johny Hendricks in a controversial split decision in 2013. Despite his rulership over the welterweight division, fans were left disappointed with GSP’s departure, and many anticipated an immediate rematch with “Big Rigg”.
Georges, however, had other plans. Aside from the ACL tear “Rush” suffered at the gym, he’s been enjoying his life outside of competition. The 34-year-old had repeatedly squashed any talk of a come back, but St-Pierre has recently teased at a return.
Last week, the former champion said he’s been getting the feeling “more and more to come back”, and now, long-time coach Firas Zahabi has further hyped a potential return.
“If Georges preps with a training camp, he’ll beat anybody,” Zahabi said on The MMA Hour. “I really feel he’s the best of the best. I think he does his training camp, he prepares, and it’s not calling out Robbie or anybody else, I think he’s the best. Him and Rory, I believe in my guys. If they get prepped, they will win.”
When asked what his intuition told him about a GSP comeback, the Tristar head coach said he believes his star student has “plenty of fighting left.”
“I think so,” he said. “I think he’s got plenty of fighting left. He’s a beast, man. You see him in the practice room, he’s a beast. I don’t think he’s slowing down a bit.”
