Former UFC light-heavyweight champion Jon Jones might still be suspended, but keeps paving the way for a potential UFC comeback with repeated, partially awkward messages on social media.
This time around, “Bones” directly addressed his successor Daniel Cormier, who recently announced that he will take some time off to recuperate after a long and grueling stint atop the UFC’s 205-pound division. In the Tweet, Jones told Cormier to “take as much time” as he wants and indicated that he is still the champion of their division.
Unsurprisingly, it didn’t take long for “DC” to respond.
Jones beat Cormier in a title fight at UFC 182 in January — Cormier’s sole career loss — but was suspended indefinitely and stripped of the UFC title a few months later, after causing a felony hit-and-run involving a pregnant woman.
This allowed Cormier to jump back into the title mix and beat Anthony Johnson for the then-vacant belt. After a successful defense against Alexander Gustafsson at UFC 192, Cormier wants to take some time off now. Although there is no word from the UFC if and when Jones’ suspension will be lifted, the rematch against Cormier would be the biggest possible fight they could make at 205 pounds.
