19-year-old Sage Northcutt, who has been a martial arts practitioner since the age of 4, dazzled in his UFC debut against Francisco Trevino the other week. The lightweight prospect blitzed Trevino with punches and ground and pound in the opening round, extending his resume to 6-0.
It’s clear that the American is being groomed as the promotion’s next big star, and it even has former UFC title-challenger turned analyst Kenny Florian hyping Northcutt as potentially “Georges St-Pierre times ten”.
In an interview with MMAJunkie yesterday, Northcutt talked about the stars he looks up to, which include Chris Weidman and Ronda Rousey.
“How (Weidman) carries himself, he’s just awesome,” Northcutt said. “Besides Chris, I guess for the girls, everything Ronda Rousey’s done is amazing.”
While the college student has a tremendous amount of respect for Rousey, Northcutt admits that he’s likely to carry himself in a different light.
“I know the way she carries herself is slightly different than the way I would carry myself, but she’s incredible in everything she’s accomplished. It’s amazing for a girl, and she’s done some awesome things.”
The Gracie Barra product recently hinted at possibly dropping education to pursue a full-time career in mixed martial arts, and is currently in Canada training with St-Pierre and Firas Zahabi.
