Three years ago, Ben Rothwell was a +235 underdog against Brendan Schaub at UFC 145. Rothwell was coming off a dismal fight with Mark Hunt, while Schaub was blasted by Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira just one month prior. Schaub was of course expected to beat Rothwell, but things didn’t go according to plan for him. Despite landing a spinning elbow that had buzzed Rothwell, “Big” Ben rallied back and KO’d Brendan until Schaub infamously started reaching for the great beyond.
Video of this recently released “free fight” by the UFC can be viewed at the top of the page.
They trade punches, Ben to the body, Schaub upstairs. Schaub with uppercuts in the clinch, Rothwell with a bit knee. Spinning elbow by Schaub looks like it hurts Ben, in the follow up it’s Rothwell with a big uppercut and hook and Schaub goes down. Rothwell landing a few more huge shots and as he is pulled off Schaub flails upward “fighting the invisible man” as they call it. Ben Rothwell wins by TKO (punches), 1:10 of round 1.
And how the Bloody Elbow community responded to the shock result:
Rothwell once again plays the underdog role at UFC Fight Night: Duffy vs. Poirier on October 24th, as he takes on Stipe Miocic in the Dublin, Ireland co-main event.
